Active vs. Passive Colors

Who isn’t fascinated by the meaning of colors? Whether or not you understand actual color meanings, we are all persuaded, moved, aroused, inspired, repulsed and informed by color and combinations of colors. There are really two different categories of colors—active and passive. Just as their name implies, active colors are very invigorating, bright, exciting, and stimulating while passive colors are very relaxing, soothing and calming.

Active Colors

Extroverts enjoy colorful surroundings. For them, under-stimulation leads to boredom Be careful with overusing active colors, they can make the body and mind restless. They are also too taxing and exhausting for people with a weak immune system.

Bright colors are considered active.  If you examine the correlation between color and mood, you’ll discover that active, bright colors tend to give one more energy. In fact, bright colors excite both mind and body, providing new energy and creative solutions.

Bright colors are strong colors. They will help with manifestation.

You can think of active colors as having yang energy qualities. They exude confidence, lightness, enthusiasm, and strength. Bright colors promote logic, outgoingness, mental and intellectual proficiency, focus and change.

Active colors include any color rich in saturation—think vibrant and colorful.

Passive Colors

An introvert likes a passive environment — over-stimulation leads to anxiety. Be careful using passive colors for high-tech or trendy clients, they are too relaxing.

Muted and neutral colors are considered passive. Unlike active colors, neutral colors are very calming.  The beauty and appeal of passive colors is that they support the physical body and actually relax your muscles. Passive colors have the ability to increase mental focus without draining the physical body.

Use passive colors if you need some grounding.

Muted, neutral colors possess yin energy attributes. They convey sensitivity, gentleness, introspection, nurturing energy, comfort and safety.

Passive colors include beige, tan, cream, pastels, silver and gold.

Fashion, Clothing, Color and Mood

As you might expect, the meaning of colors extends to your wardrobe.  The color of clothing you wear can influence how you feel, as well as how others perceive you.

Each color has its own unique vibration. If you understand this, then you can choose the colors you wear with a specific intention in mind.

  • Red will make you feel strong and powerful. This is a great color to wear for negotiating.
  • Yellow will make you feel more grounded and focuses your attention.
  • Green is soothing and healing.  
  • Blue is very calming and encourages introspection and clear communication.
  • Purple evokes nobility and abundance.
  • Black is good to wear if you seek reflection or want to focus on your life path. Be careful though, black can make some people feel depressed.
  • White is conducive for spirituality and creativity.
  • Grey moves people into action and supports completion.
  • Pink is a good color to wear if you seek romance. Don’t overdue it, pink can make people feel powerless.
